Students I work with are extremely low 4th and 5th grade readers. They lash out in frustration as the material in the classroom becomes harder every year and as they see it "boring." Though we have worked hard over the last year, our state-wide scores are still low in reading and math. The school is located in a low income and high crime area. Class sizes for the 4th and 5th grade average 30 students per class. The students have to be tough to survive. Our population is culturally diverse with many English Learners (EL students) and many students who just don't receive any help at home. Looking beyond the circumstances, the students are in need of new material which would interest them and could help them succeed. In addition, these magazines will allow the students to see what is happening in the world outside of this area since there are also many whose parents also went to this school.
