I teach in a very rural school with roughly 750 students enrolled. I am a special education teacher, and my 60 students make up a portion of that population. These 60 kids are amazing. They constantly have a smile on their face and are hungry to learn. But the problem we have is not a lack of want, its a lack of resources. Our funds are constantly low. Our school struggles to make sure the general ed. classrooms get what they need, so if we made an order of priority, my population is at the bottom of the list every time. My students have had to read from the same 1994 Life Skills Science book for the past 7 years. Some of my kids even tell me that certain things have been cured when we read about them. I don't ever want my students to think they aren't worthy of new things. I want them to believe that people care about what and how they are learning. That to me means everything.
