This year I have had the opportunity to introduce yoga and meditation to my fifth and sixth grade students during the first half hour of the school day. I have offered yoga as an optional program to students who are willing and permitted to come to the gym first thing in the morning twice per week. The first week, I had eight students turn out. Eight turned into 15 which turned into 32 which now has grown into 49 students two days in a row. How exciting! My goal is to instruct yoga to 100 to 150 students per yoga class. Unfortunately, I only have 35 yoga mats and started using the big folding gym mats. I chose yoga mats as the resource for this project as I am attempting to get more and more children starting their day with dynamic movement, strength building, flexibility training, and mindfulness all via yoga. The feedback I am getting has been phenomenal so far. One student told me that yoga helps her wake up in the morning because she wants to come to school on yoga days. Another student told me she has been using the breathing techniques she has learned to help her when she feels she needed them. Another student who has autism has been excelling and improving in his ability to perform yoga with little to no assistance! I want to give my students all the tools they need to become physically fit, to cope with life's challenges, and to improve their overall wellness.
