This book set, Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, allows my students to examine a past epidemic/pandemic, make comparisons to the one currently happening, and reflect on how far we have or have not progressed when it comes to public health. I envision this to be a group read and discussion piece to be completed in class so students or I can guide the discussion productively. I also plan to have students keep a reading journal with the scientific content or public health measures they note from the text. Ultimately, I want students to see that we as a country and population will ultimately recover, help them process what is going on, and reflect on similarities between then and now.
