Education used to be a world of "sit and get" in straight, quiet rows and it worked! However, things have changed and in order to prepare today's students for tomorrow's world we must accept it and make some changes. The definition of change is to become different. Students are now digital natives. They are being raised in a world that we could only imagine when I began teaching. They are social kids who rapidly switch tasks and use devises constantly. That is a lot to compete with as a teacher. Sitting still seemed to be the most challenging part of school for some students so I decided to make a change. Several years ago, I eliminated the traditional classroom look from my room and began to use alternative seating. I did this to help find ways for students to be able to sharpen their focus, become engaged and to be able to work in groups to collaborate, communicate and solve problems; after all these are the skills they will need for success. The use of flexible seating has allowed my students to take responsibility for how they learn best. It has also allowed me to spend less time on off task behaviors and more time on helping my students grow as learners. They are now actively engaged and learning all while being the wiggly digital natives that they are! Many of the seats that I purchased in the past were not meant to hold up in a classroom setting and need replaced. Buying these "wobble seats" will allow me to replace the current stools I have with some that are meant to move. By providing the "wobble seats," the students will be more focused and better prepared to daily challenges.
