Most of my students are English Language Learners. They come from very low income homes. Many of them do not have any understanding of print concepts or letter recognition skills. They are sweet children, but inexperienced. Our school is in the center of this low income neighborhood. It is surrounded on all sides by tall chain metal fences. The school stays locked down at all times, except for arrival and dismissal. Many of the classrooms have bars on the windows and doors. I am happy mine is not one of these. I have a small classroom at the end of the hall and I have made it as bright and beautiful as I can! The school is filled with teachers who are doing their best to work with limited materials. I did not have pencils until the 4th day of school (other than the pencils I purchased myself.) The school finally gave me 12, one pencil for every two students. I've spent thousands of dollars already to make sure my students have the basic supplies they need.
