Math and science skills are imperative to succeed in today's world. As a part of my chemistry class, I emphasize skills that students will need in college. While there are several, I like to focus on access to computing skills. Knowing how to use a calculator to aid in calculations is a computing skill that I prioritize. Many students currently use their phones as calculators and while this works for simple calculations, it does not allow them to easily input complex equations and numbers. This creates another barrier for students during testing, and makes it harder for students to express understanding of a concept. Additionally, when students take standardized assessments such as the ACT, they will not be allowed to use a phone calculator. As such, my goal is to make them familiar with what they will be expected to use on standardized testing.
