In our modern school curriculum we often read books that only show the traumatic experiences of Black people. In this project I want to center a text that celebrates the Black experiences and shows my students a world where a strong Black man can envision a world he wants to live in and take action to make that happen. Just Mercy is a story that shows the realities of America and also will show students that they have the agency to create change and to create a country that is equitable and just. We're asking for 65 young adult books in order to differentiate for all of our students. I'm excited for my students to engage with this text in order to develop these important reading and writing skills we're working on this year. Finally the discussions we have together will illuminate student understanding of inequities in the justice system so they can advocate for change.
