I am a special education teacher of middle school children (5th-8th grade) diagnosed with autism and moderate to severe/profound cognitive delays in the Chicago Public Schools system. My students are ethnically diverse and all of them qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. Out of ten students three of those students are verbal. Many are from working class single parent households. The families also receive some sort of financial assistance and medical assistance from the federal government. My students come from many different areas of the city because only certain schools provide services for children with autism and moderate to severe/profound cognitive delays. Our school sits in the heart of the housing projects and we face serious challenges such as lack of resources and unsafe conditions outside of our school building. Lack of funding has caused the principal to make decisions that causes our program to go without necessary resources.
