Teaching Science at NEMS, I've noticed that our students spend very little time outdoors and know very little about nature nowadays. For that matter, they barely see themselves as a part of the greater picture, and they fail to see their impact that can better our world. We are requesting two greenhouses, magnet animal and plant cell models and markers. By having these materials, my students will question the wonders of Nature/Science through real-life phenomena such as; Recycling, Gardening, Etc, and design real-world applications out of what they're learning about animals and plants. We focus all year on plants, animals and Earth Science such as soil, sand, water, and rocks and the program will directly benefit students' learning in these areas. Long term goal includes: 1- Students will initiate the Green Leaf Club. They will set goals and a detailed step by step plan of how to keep the school clean by using all the cafeteria leftovers and other trash to make the compost. At the same time, we'll be working on reconstructing the existing Greenhouse our school owns. Step 2: Continuously Planting, observing, recording, counting, analyzing and concluding will provide first-hand math, reading, writing and following instructions skills to students. Throughout the year the students will use posters to explain, design, advertise and create projects to further their learning in multiple areas. Step 3: The students will be able to compare and contrast between animals and plants as living things by using studying them to their smallest unit, (Cells) and watching them grow in our Green house, such as tadpoles, fish, butterflies, etc.
