My students are considered behavioral students. They are placed here for a variety of reasons: continued misbehavior, drugs, alcohol, and weapons charges. 95% of them are two reading levels or more behind. I have noticed that because of their lack of reading ability, they often turn to being disruptive in the classroom. Some turn to drugs and alcohol to self-medicate to "make it" through the day. They have serious gaps in their skill levels. The students are sent to our school for punishment but we try to bridge that gap in each academic area. They need practice on their reading level in order to bridge that gap.
