Having a listening center with wireless headphones will allow my kindergartners to listen to a wider variety of fun, engaging books they could not otherwise read on their own. The wireless headphones will allow them more choice in where they sit for the story, and help us avoid management issues like tangled cords. Listening to reading will expose my students to expressive, fluent reading, expand their vocabulary & reinforce their growing sense of story structure. Students will be able to enjoy quality literature, and respond to what they listen to by talking about the stories, retelling, or acting them out. Research shows that listening to reading is one of the critical components to supporting literacy development and a love of reading. Young children are able to comprehend and talk about books well above their own reading level. A listening center supports this language and cognitive development during our busy literacy block.
