In young children, the right brain (emotions) tends to rule over the logic of the left brain. Children need to learn how to integrate the left and right. When the whole brain is nurtured children can lead calmer, more focused, happier lives, especially in school. Mats and cushions are used to practice mindful activities. My children will listen to music, read aloud books or follow mindful movements on a DVD. The chime/bell will be rung to remind students to take deep breaths and return to the present. Mindful coloring books provide opportunities for calming down. A breathing buddy is placed on the body to teach breathing.
