My third graders are highly motivated by technology, but it is important for them to learn to use it in a purposeful way. Although they are familiar with video games and apps on their parents' cell phones, many students don't yet understand the value of technology as a learning tool. Chromebooks are an incredible tool to integrate real world technology and classroom based learning in meaningful ways. Students can use classroom laptops as a tool to communicate what they have learned and share their thinking and reasoning in self-recorded videos which can be shared with the teacher, classmates and even parents during conferences. They can research for STEM projects and then develop a video presentation to be shared at a later time. At centers, students can use QR codes to access instructions from the teacher, books for read aloud, and as a means to differentiate learning assignments for students with varying strengths and needs. They can be used in small groups of 2-3 students thus promoting collaboration skills as well encouraging critical thinking and communication skills, all of which are essential 21st century job skills.
