œI actually READ that book!" That is one of the most important things a reluctant reader can say. Unfortunately, most books that are assigned in the high school classroom are ones that students tend to find outdated and boring. By incorporating YA novels into the curriculum, both as stand-alone reads & paired texts, I noticed something spectacular: students not only read the novels, but they also discussed them outside of class. How can I keep my more reluctant readers interested? What novels can I read with my C-level & honors classes? The answer lies in finding the right combination of quality literature & high interest. Writers like John Green, Sherman Alexie, & Stephen Chbosky have been excellent resources to fulfill this balancing quest. Many of my students are not from wealthy families & without the support at home, they truly struggle to find their identity. Novels with characters who are forced to make hard choices , as individuals & as part of a society, mimics real life.
