My school is a public elementary school in Alexandria, VA. It is one of the most expensive places in the country to live, and yet, immigrants and refugees are drawn here by the thousands. These are the families in my community. My school operates at an 82% ESOL rate (82% of our students do not speak English as their first language, most of them do not speak English at home) and and equally high free and reduced lunch (Many of our families can't afford lunch on a daily basis). These families work hard to give their children a life that is better than the one they had. These students need to practice English Vocabulary. Several of the students in my class are 'new to country', meaning they just started speaking English on a regular basis this year, but we still expect them to take SOLs on a 4th grade reading level. The poverty these students live in leaves them without technology at home, yet we expect them to take every 'High Stakes' test online. Please help me level the field.
