My students think that Science is detached from all the other subjects like math, technology, reading or writing. The culture of testing that students have been constantly subject to has shaped this mindset. In a low-performing school, there is an overemphasis on grades and CST scores. This kind of culture of education has turned students away from recognizing and enjoying the beauty behind the complexity of the sciences. Students are limited in their ability to connect the standards that they are learning to real life situations. However, despite the culture of education that students face in this high poverty area, I know that my students are leaders, waiting to be unleashed. Their stories are beautiful. My students are resilient. They lead, they think and they do.
