I teach in a small school in a rural community. My school is in a close, tight knit community. Many of the students have been together since kindergarten. As education is based upon relationships, I enjoy working in a place where I know all 320 students and many of their families. There are two fifth grade classrooms (60 students) at my school, and I am tasked with teaching the social studies curriculum to students in both classes and my partner teaches the science curriculum. At a glance, my classroom may not appear very diverse, but looks can be deceiving. There are huge socioeconomic disparities within our school. Also, this year I have one student with autism, 3 others with learning disabilities and a number of behavior issues which keep me on my toes each day. Most of my students however, love to be at school and thrive in my classroom.
