I am a special education teacher for kindergarten through fifth grade students with multiple learning challenges. I teach in a self contained classroom in a public school in Illinois with a student population of 400. My classroom is a busy environment with up to four different grade levels during any given subject. My students have varied abilities and learning differences ranging from specific learning disabilities to mild cognitive impairments. My school is part of a large public school system that is in constant budgetary limitations. Direct classroom cuts, specifically to the population I teach, are not uncommon in my district. However, I am grateful for every child and family I have had the opportunity to teach and work with throughout my career.
