My students are struggling readers and writers that receive direct instruction in a self-contained setting. Most of them are reading below grade level at the start of the year. We are a 6-12 school in NYC that has an amazing literacy program. Every English classroom in the building starts class with students silently reading books of their choice for at least thirty minutes. Our English classes in grades 6-10 are two hours long to accommodate the Independent Reading curriculum and reading and writing workshop.
