My 1st grade students all come from immigrant families whose primary language is Chinese. Everyday, they line up in the yard, eager for the bell to ring so that they can come in to eat a state funded breakfast in the classroom. But before coming into the building, the entire school body proudly chants, "I AM my community, my community is me! I LEARN from my community, my community learns from me!" I HELP my community, MY COMMUNITY HELPS ME!" Our urban school is a very special place-a community school, where we have established a set of partnerships between the school and various community resources. Our integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities.
