The majority of our students are from Central American families, many who immigrated recently. We are a Title I school and 95% of our students receive free lunch. The school is unique in New York City because it has a dual language program (Spanish/English) and a deep commitment to social and emotional learning. The work the school does on teaching social skills has created a warm and loving environment. The students face huge challenges in their lives but the social and emotional work the school does has helped them manage their emotions. A major challenge my students face academically is in reading. Most of my students are English language learners. They not only have low vocabulary but they are lacking in a diversity of prior experiences to help them comprehend more difficult books.
