We have an open enrollment policy at my school, so any child in the city can attend if there is space. It's a charter school, and the focus is on the performing arts. Almost all of the students are economically disadvantaged, so the school administration relies on grants as well as dipping into their own pockets for materials. This is our third year in operation in New Orleans. We've moved to three different school sites, but have purchased a building for next school year. In spite of the difficulties we have had, our student population is growing. The word is out that we have a rigorous program, caring teachers, and we consider the arts as essential. All of our students are learning to play instruments: keyboards, guitars, drums, ukuleles, etc., as well as tap and folk dancing. Visual art is fully integrated with academics, so the art teacher and classroom teacher collaborate on projects that will solidify the concepts the students are learning and make learning them fun.
