I teach literacy to 4th and 5th grade students in an urban setting. My elementary school is a unique and special place. We are a diverse population and our school culture embraces the backgrounds of our students and their unique learning styles and personalities. Seventy six percent of our students come from households that live below the poverty line. In many situations multiple families live in the same household. This often means that our students do not have access to many items that other children may have. In spite of that, our parents are supportive and do all that they can to ensure that their children get the education that they need and deserve. I want to make my classroom environment welcoming to my students and have them feel comfortable and engaged. A classroom set of reading materials for each child to take ownership of will enable them to have access to text that they find interesting and engaging.
