I have 11 boys and 8 girls in my 3rd Grade classroom. My school has about 60% higher middle class and 40% that are economically disadvantaged. 3rd Grade is an important year in my state as that is where most of the standardized testing occurs that determine many decisions. In my state, how 3rd graders perform on their standardized tests affect how many teachers are graded and compensated. Also in my state, there is a state law that states that if a child does not pass their standardized test in 3rd grade, the child will be retained (if not in a special education class). With that being said, I do not focus on testing with my students. My focus is on learning and everything else falls where it may be. I enjoy teaching and love it when I hear a student says, "Oh.....that's why we do so and so." This makes my heart smile as they have just made a connection to a concept that will be lifelong. :)
