Our school services approximately 465 students. 85% of these students would qualify for free or reduced lunch. 20% of our students are Hispanic, 60% African-American, 20% Caucasian and 10% other. We have a very diverse population of nationalities-representing around 18 countries not including Mexico. 85% of these students live in an apartment. I am amazed at how many of the students have NEVER been out of their apartment complex, other than coming to school. We live in a marvelous city, full of history and culture, architecture and art. MOST of these students have never seen any of this. Art is a way to bring the diversity in our school together and expose these students to the world around them. The students love coming to The Art Studio. They never know what lesson awaits them. My students come to class eager to create and explore with their minds. I have been at my school for 8 years. I have seen such a growth in the imagination and creativity of these students over these years.
