Most of my students come from single parent homes and live in poverty. When they come home from school they are expected to take care of their younger siblings and have little to no help with school work or homework. My students seldom have time to actually sit down and enjoy a good book. As most are reading 2 or 3 grades below grade level, they get easily frustrated with reading and don't possess the skills yet to become better readers. They are full of potential, but lack the confidence to recognize it within themselves. My school has a majority population of African American students and approximately 90% of students are on free or reduced lunch. Many of our students live in poverty and do not even receive the necessities, so the majority of students have no access to books outside of the classroom.
