My students came to me with a natural curiosity of rocks. One morning during our meeting time, they brought me a beautifully illustrated book about rocks and we became hooked. We learned where rocks came from - the earth's crust and outer space - how old the oldest rock was - 4.4 billion years old - how animals use rocks - chicken eat them to help them digest and alligators eat rocks to help them stay underwater for longer periods of time. I would love to extend their learning by showing them the process of turning rocks into gems and a rock tumbler is the best way to do this. I also love the idea that this process takes several steps and requires a lot of patience.
