Have you ever missed lunch because you couldn't afford it? Or felt discriminated against because you are a different? The majority of my students come from low-income communities where neither parent has attended any college--and my students have experienced missed meals, discrimination, homelessness, or PTSD from growing up where they do. However, my students do not let that define them. Despite (and in some ways because) of the adversity they face, they are the most inspirational individuals I know. They are taking on challenging AP courses, participating in various clubs, and becoming active community members in order to better their own lives--and their families lives. Do you give a man a fish--or do you give a man a fishing pole? My students don't want to be given 'fish' the rest of their lives, they want fishing poles so they can teach others in their community to fish as well. Right now they just need the fishing pole.
