My students go to a school where music takes a back seat to test scores and academic achievement. They have a motivated teacher who wants to create powerful music with all of his students. These students are under high pressure by their parents, their teachers, and other students to compete and be the best at everything. They feel that if they don't take 5 AP classes and score almost perfect on their SATs that they have no chance at life. Music offers them a respite in the day from all of that pressure. When they come into class, they think that this is a competitive environment. They soon realize that music is something totally opposite of competition, it's about working together to achieve a common goal. Students learn how to positively motivate each other to do better and to intrinsically motivate themselves.

About my class
