I teach mostly under-represented, impoverished students in a lower income area. Many of my students are first-generation Americans, most of them from a Hispanic background. Our school's focus is to better prepare our students for college and beyond. As many of these students are also potentially first-generation college attendees, this makes rigor a paramount when designing curriculum. The intention is that using the requested materials will aid in enhancing the rigor of my classroom. The materials that I requested will be used for AP biology, a course that, as it is redesigned, relies heavily on problem-solving and analytical abilities. Up to now, many of my students have succeeded in the traditional, rote classroom setting and, as such, most are lacking in higher level skills. Although a challenge to make that jump, these students have signed up for this course with the intention of being challenged and have pledged to work hard to meet the needs of this course.
