Any profession other than teaching for me would have been wrong ethically. Teaching is where my strengths, confidences, and most importantly, my passions lie. Working in a high poverty setting has instilled in me a genuine desire to provide every opportunity for each student to succeed in a way that best suits them. My hope for these novels is that the messages throughout can help bring understanding and some resolution after the wake of a school-wide tragedy. In my school, 100% of students receive free or reduced lunch. Often it is hard for outsiders to look at a high school classroom and see what truly occurs inside: children being taught to forge their way in the world. But these students are still children starving for knowledge and acceptance in a harsh world. Having access to literature that is current and relevant to students' lives would be an enormous push to ensure that students are not only learning academically, but challenging world views to become critical thinkers.
