My students are typical teenagers (whatever that is). They love their phones, but their world is small (for now). One might say that our school is a stereotypical urban school in that there are those issues of resources and achievement, yet we are a community school by definition as well in that the much needed social services are coordinated through in-house programs in partnership w/our community's agencies and university. Our district had closed the school a few years ago in a budget crisis, and as the merchants fled and the students failed, the community petitioned the school board to open "their" school - they did! This "family reunion" has seen improved graduation rates and a return of parental involvement whereby tradition and history support our programs as much as the outside resources.
