Dear ,

We're sending this note to say thank you! And hi!

And Happy Teacher Appreciation Day! Why?

Because ?Happy Teacher (who is also a cheerleader,

scientist, therapist, artist, and speed reader,

mentor and nurse and tech whiz and referee,

role model, roll caller, all-around MVP

who deserves our eternal) Appreciation Day?

takes such a very, very long time to say.

My students come from a background where the food they receive at school may be the only time they eat during the day. They go home to families where they have to play the adult, because the individuals that are supposed to be their role models are in jail. My students are bright and capable, but they do not have the tools at their disposal to learn to their maximum benefit. I work at a Title I school, and I no longer want to see my students being defined by their community but rather using their education as a weapon to mold their lives.
