My high achieving advanced placement environmental science students push themselves hard and often experience burn-out and mental fatigue which leads to increased stress and anxiety. It is difficult to learn complex concepts and perform science at high levels when students are feeling stressed and tired. I am assembling a class set of equipment like jump ropes, hula hoops, yo yo's, anti-stress balls, and the like, designed to give my students structured movement breaks and opportunities to relax their minds, move their bodies, laugh, play, and take a mental break from the rigors of academia that dominate their lives. I have experimented with giving my students 5 minute breaks in the middle of a 90 minute block lesson and observed that it helps them get energized and refocused for the rest of class. Albert Einstein once said "play is the highest form of research". A few minutes of play and a good mental break reduces my students anxiety and increases their creativity and motivation to learn. This equipment will help me formalize structured play breaks in my class and promote healthy living and learning.
