Statistically, my students are almost exclusively from traditionally under-served populations and socioeconomically disadvantaged families. A very large portion of them are English Learners as well. As a teacher, I am attempting to support and challenge all my students to reach their unique potentials as scholars and as individuals. My students are doing everything 'first.' Many of their parents do not speak English and have little formal education. Many of these children have substantial family responsibilities on top of being the first in their families to be heading toward a high school diploma or college degree. They lack confidence and are extremely grateful when educators invest time and attention in them- they need to know we believe in them! These students don't yet know what options are available, and are just waiting to be inspired to become our world's next innovators and intellectual pioneers.
