Into the Wild is a book that garners a reaction from every reader, whether the reader admires Chris McCandless or views him as reckless and impatient. My students are no different in their reactions of this reading. I was fortunate enough to have donors help provide a class set of these books years ago. It has provided my students with a story that not only engages them but also allows them to see a modern Transcendentalist, tying directly into our studies of Emerson and Thoreau. As the years have passed, copies of Into the Wild have walked off with students. (I take this as a compliment!) I need to replace these books and accommodate for growing class sizes with more copies of the book. I also wish to expand this study of a non-fiction text as an opportunity to show my students how to examine author's purpose and bias. The perspective of Chris's sister in The Wild Truth and the PBS documentary Return to the Wild that includes interviews with Chris's family will provide additional resources to fact check Krakauer's book and give a starting point for students to analyze Krakauer's bias.
