An important skill for fourth and fifth graders to learn is annotating a text. This allows students to think about what they are reading and record their thoughts in a structured way. My students will use the write and wipe pockets to record their reactions and analysis of the text. Research has shown that when English learners use their native language to help clarify concepts, it actually accelerates their English development. The Spanish-English dictionary will be used extensively by my students to help clarify confusing concepts in English. Finally, the composition notebooks will be used daily in my class. Students will record new vocabulary words, make plans for essays and stories, and write their thoughts in response to text. These materials will help build their literacy through practice and daily repetition.
