Many of my K-3 remedial reading students live in poverty. They come from diverse backgrounds. Some only see books when they are in school. Many do not have books of their own at home. They begin to get so excited once they are able to read the print on a page. They are eager to read more and want to have books available on a variety of topics. My students, even without home support, become self-motivated and love to share what they have read about.
