I teach at a diverse Title 1 school in California where nearly all of my students receive free lunch because of socioeconomic difficulties. Many of the families have parents that work evenings or two jobs; other students live with grandparents or extended family. These families struggle to make ends meet and often cannot give their children the materials needed to foster a love of art and technology. The students rely on the supplies provided in the classroom to meet their needs. I love teaching 5th grade and exposing students to art, artists, and technologies that help many of them find an outlet to overcome the difficulties they face. It is exciting for them as well as for me.
