I am fortunate to spend the days with 22 fun, resilient, and hardworking 3rd graders. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Tagalog, or Urdu at home. In addition to the diversity in culture and language, comes a wide variance in academic proficiency, as well as mastery of the socio-emotional skills critical for school success. My school, located in San Francisco, identifies as a Community School, which is a strategy for organizing community resources around student success. We subscribe to a holistic view of our students and employ an integrated focus on academics, socio-emotional supports, and family engagement activities that lead not only to improved student learning, but also to stronger families and healthier communities.
