The students I service are New Americans and constantly craving more information. Most of the students are refugees coming to us directly from refugee camps in Africa. Most of the students have never attended school before this experience. Most of my students, though they have left a life of warfare and starvation, are still living with the constant struggle of extreme poverty. Many of the students live in homes that are less than adequate and their families do not have the means to always have food on the table. My school is 100% free and reduced lunch with a 77% English Language Learner population. The students love new experiences, developing deep and meaningful connections with others, listening to music and stories read aloud, being outside, playing educational games, learning about differing cultures, and teaching others about their native culture and language.
