My school is a bilingual charter school that serves native Hawaiians. The school's mission is to encourage students to be active and productive community members and to preserve the original Niihau dialect of the beautiful Hawaiian language while teaching students to excel in academic English. This library project is specifically for a new classroom serving fifteen 3rd and 4th graders. All the students are native Hawaiians and are bilingual. They live in a very remote area of Hawaii. The students in this classroom live in one of the most beautiful places on earth surrounded by luxurious resorts. The students do not enjoy the wealth and opportunities of many children in the mainland due to their geographic isolation and socio-economic status. I am a new teacher to the school community, moving from the east coast to Hawaii in four weeks. I am so excited to meet the students and set up a warm and inviting space for them to learn and grow.
