My students live in a small, rural town in the South. Over the course of the last ten years, all of the textile mills in our community have closed, leaving our town struggling to survive. Over 75% of my students are on free/reduced lunch and over 60% of families are living below the poverty line. Because of financial struggle, school becomes a safe place where meals are provided and stability is given. My students range in ability from a basic level to honors level. More than 75% of my students are involved in extra curricular activities and school athletics. Over 60% of my students work a part-time, after school job. My students often struggle to see the importance of reading; after all, they have other real worries. However, when I can prove to my students that reading can be applied to their lives, they dig right in and work to find the novel's meaning and apply it personally. My students want to succeed in school in hopes of providing a future that is better than their present.
