In 5th grade, students are introduced to some of the most important math that they'll see including decimal place value, fractions and long division. These concepts are often stumbling blocks that keep students from succeeding in math not only in the 5th grade, but grades beyond. If we can make these concepts more real for students by giving them something to hold onto, then we can change their experience with math for the rest of their lives. With base 10 blocks students can see and feel the magnitude of difference between 1 whole and 1 tenth and 1 hundredth, and when they understand this, they can better make sense of the relative size of objects in the world; with fraction tiles, students will better understand how the numerator and denominator interact to make parts of a whole; and with tape measures and rulers, students can put this understanding to work in a real context. With all of By using these tools, students will be able to build a rich sense of how our world is measured, and with this understanding, they can become better mathematicians and better thinkers.
