The books have been carefully selected to spark interest in the areas of math, coding, and science. Math is a subject that is hard to demonstrate real-world connections. They are learning such foundational skills and it is often difficult for them to understand the why. The books written by Greg Tan can help students deepen their thinking and see connections beyond memorizing basic algorithms. Coding is a totally new concept for my students this year. They have been learning the basics and are ready for the application level. Students will be using a program called Scratch. A handful of the books selected are Scratch guidebooks. For younger students it's a little challenging to toggle between tabs in a browser and so, having a tangible user guide will help as they begin to build projects. The other coding language books are written at my students' level and give them insight into the big world of coding. Lastly, science. In order for students to be successful in a STEAM career, they need to be bold in questioning the world around them and seek to understand through testing and/or research. They need to read about role models in science, to understand failure is often part of the process. Stories of great inventors will encourage students to make adjustments and try again versus failing and giving up. All of these books are full of color, and text features that are sure to grab students' interest. The books will be accessible in our classroom library, which students are able to borrow from any time. Help me develop a love for learning through literacy!
