Research shows that one of the most effect ways to increase language skills in children is through literacy. Books are a great way to learn new vocabulary, attend to a language-centered activity, and relate to others. I noticed that books are a universal way to increase language abilities in my speech therapy sessions. Currently, I go to the library and take out books that I would like to use in my therapy sessions: however, the books are often unavailable or require a waiting list. The biggest issue for me with library books is that I am unable to adapt the books to my students needs. For example, my students benefit from picture symbols in the story and love interactive books. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books and have follow up activities to help bring the books to life. They love interactive books and activities related to the readings as a way to review the story and the target vocabulary. The students already enjoy learning through reading, these selected books and follow up activities will help enrich their experiences with the printed word. For example, one of the books I asked for is "Curious George goes the beach", my plan is to create interactive materials for the book. I create picture symbols for the books that I own, this encourages students to participate in the reading and help learn vocabulary in the story. After the reading, the students would have a change to bring the book to life by incorporating the Curious George Toy and playing the Curious George Discovery Beach Game. This would allow the student to practice labeling, describing objects they read about in the story, and following the rules of the game.
