My class consists of students who are transitioning from a non-testing grade to a "testing grade." Many receive free or reduced lunch. Most of the students do not feel confident about their reading, math or writing skills. The students are more likely to attempt academic practice utilizing a computer rather than the old-fashioned paper and pencil approach. Although the students feel that they are having fun on the computer, they are actually practicing and learning academic skills necessary for 3rd grade. Technology is a medium that allows my students to engage and interact without the usual fear of speaking in the classroom. It gives them a feeling of success, and makes them more willing to attempt new activities related to learning without the feeling that they are "doing schoolwork" because it seems more like entertainment to them. As students experience success, they will learn and do more.
