When my students walk through the door, I greet them with a smile. I want the environment to be warming and safe for them. My students live in a high poverty, farming community, have multiple siblings, and are English Language Learners. My school has very little, if any, parent involvement. If supplies are needed, the local Dollar Store is the one place with anything (for the entire town.) It is a blessing if my students enter class with a pencil and paper from day to day. I saw the light bulbs go off this past school year when I began my first interactive notebook with them. They were creating their "own" masterpiece that enabled them to organize and synthesize information. And because it provides the sense of "ownership", they were "happy" about learning. We need help in bringing our notebooks to life!
