Our school is in a large district with a high level of poverty students--98% are on free or reduced lunch. Two-thirds of our school is bilingual--students learn to read in Spanish first, then transition to English. The students are well behaved, from hard-working families, but have few opportunities to explore life beyond their neighborhoods. Few have books in their homes or city library cards. Many students struggle with reading and there is always a "summer slide."
